TELLING STORIES….

My Beloved: Tracy Chapman - Telling it Like it is.
My Beloved: Tracy Chapman – Telling it Like it is.

Good Day!

This Sunday’s blog post will be short. As I am busy telling stories at the National Results Operating Centre in Pretoria, South Africa.

We are just three days away from one of the most talked about and contested national elections since 1994. At least here in South Africa elections and Voting – are buzz words. People greet each other with ” hi, are you voting?” Instead of how are you!

It’s pretty exciting to be a part of it all.  I’m torn between the ANC’s last and final election rally at the FNB stadium and the  EFF’s Tshela Thupa (whip ’em) rally being broadcast live on  television, that and the endless stream of  political analysts and news-makers who walk through these large doors.  “It’s a journalists dream ” says a colleague.

But I woke up this morning with Tracey Chapman on my mind! I love this woman with all my heart….I never used to understand my father’s love  for her. I used to get so irritated with my father “why does he have to play her music all the time! ” oh  but now I get it, and all too well. This song “Telling Stories” inspired the name for my blog “Between the Lines”.

This is the song that woke me up this morning. It was speaking to me. My life, my blog, my writing, I always try to be true. But there is always this  “space” of “fiction”  between  me and you and all of us.

I fell in love with Tracey Chapman in my early 20’s even though I grew up with her music blaring from my father’s hi-fi system and car radio. I chose to love her on a hot-summer-holiday in Cape Town. She walked the streets with me and helped me understand who I was.  She re- introduced me to myself in a way no other musician has.

Apparently people have a short attention span these days….no one wants to read long stories that are not immediately relevant to their lives.  I think Tracey can tell you a story you don’t have the  time to read and one which I don’t have the time to write in  just under 4 minutes. I ‘ve included the lyrics at the bottom and you can enjoy her sultry voice here.

Did I tell you I lOVE Tracy Chapman? yes love this woman with all my heart and maybe one day you too, will “get” it.

TELLING STORIES  by Tracy Chapman

There is fiction in the space between
The lines on your page of memories
Write it down but it doesn’t mean
You’re not just telling stories
There is fiction in the space between
You and me

There is fiction in the space between
You and reality
You will do and say anything
To make your everyday life
Seem less mundane
There is fiction in the space between
You and me

There’s a science fiction in the space between
You and me
A fabrication of a grand scheme
Where I am the scary monster
I eat the city and as I leave the scene
In my spaceship I am laughing
In your remembrance of your bad dream
There’s no one but you standing

Leave the pity and the blame
For the ones who do not speak
You write the words to get respect and compassion
And for posterity
You write the words and make believe
There is truth in the space between

There is fiction in the space between
You and everybody
Give us all what we need
Give us one more sad sordid story
But in the fiction of the space between
Sometimes a lie is the best thing
Sometimes a lie is the best thing
